You Can Say You Tried It
You may or may not have liked it, but you at least took the time to try the sport, and that’s more than many people. You might’ve been nervous, shy, or felt out of shape, but you put that gi on and learned how to armbar someone.
You Gain Experience
They say there's a first time for everything for a reason. Each and every person on the mat with you has gone through day one, just like you. Now, they've slowly learned more and more technique, and have developed what they know today. It all starts with the basics, and like any art, it grows and flourishes little by little each minute you put into it.
You Gain Family and Friendship
We value each other as more than just teammates and rolling partners; we're family. Bruno Lima, our head instructor, always says that you need your friends to practice BJJ. You need a partner for everything you do from drills to rolling, and you are always in close contact. You can’t be a stranger to someone you armbar on a regular basis after all.
You Begin Building Your Strength
Many people say that they need to get into shape before they try BJJ, which could not be further from the truth. The best conditioning that you can do to get ready for BJJ is BJJ. There isn’t an exercise that does what BJJ does. Sure, being stronger helps, but BJJ fitness is something entirely unique. The best thing you can do is come as you are and build your strength on the mat.
You Find More Than a Hobby. You Join a Lifestyle
You might've heard that BJJ is like therapy, and it’s easy to forget everything else and focus on the moment. You also might've heard that BJJ is human chess. BJJ is a strategic sport, your mind is challenged as much as your body. There's something about being on the mat, whether it's the stress relief or the challenge, that makes people passionate about the sport. They want to get into shape, eat well, compete in tournaments, get belts and stripes, and reach their goals. In response, they put a lot of time into the sport and love every moment. BJJ often changes people’s lifestyles for the better.
You Put Your Health First
If you’re serious about getting into shape and being healthy, BJJ is the perfect sport to push you to be your best. BJJ is often called the gentle art because a smaller opponent can use their leverage to win, but being healthier and stronger can give you an even better edge. Practicing BJJ requires your whole body, even muscles you might’ve never used before. Having a healthy diet, allows for optimal performance and stamina. Together with a community who values good health, you will have the motivation and resources to lead a healthy lifestyle.
You Meet a Mentor and a Support System
Bruno Lima has been training and competing in BJJ since the age of 16. He has more than 17 years of experience in BJJ. Bruno’s instructor, who comes once a year to teach, has more than 40 years of experience. Together they have immense knowledge in BJJ and have spent years crafting their techniques and strategies. You also have all of your teammates who have had their own unique experiences. Everyone on your team understands the journey and can offer support and guidance.
You Learn Dedication, Discipline, and Respect
Our core values are dedication, discipline, and respect.
Dedication
In order to succeed, you need to be dedicated. No one gets a black belt without putting in hours on the mat and some serious focus and determination.
Discipline
There is no growth without discipline. Just like spending hours studying math and English, practicing BJJ requires time and discipline.
Respect
We strive to respect everyone who comes to our gym, regardless of their background, because we are all equal.
If you stick with BJJ, whether you earn your first stripe or your first belt, you will show that you have learned dedication, discipline, and respect.
